Home Study Requirements
For all adoptions legally finalized in Massachusetts, a licensed adoption agency must perform a home study. The US Immigration and Naturalization Service also requires a home study to process international adoptions.
The home study is an in-depth evaluation that not only explores your circumstances, history, home setting and suitability to adopt, but educates the prospective parent on what adoption involves. In our experience, the home study is helpful, pleasant and growth enhancing.
We conduct a series of visits and interviews, then prepare a detailed report that becomes part of your adoption dossier. We address:
- We explore your outlook on adoption and your emotional readiness. Our team discusses family history, mental health, and infertility. We also evaluate your nurturing abilities and how you manage conflict.
A home study can take anywhere from several weeks to a few months to complete.
Additional documents we’ll need from you for the home study:
Physicians statement (short statement from your physician giving an opinion of the potential effects of an adoption on your present and future health and well-being.)
Financial statement (first page of IRS Form 1040 from the past year.)
